Project 1 - Exact | Representation and The Uncanny[Read more]

Project Description: The Uncanny Valley studies human’s emotional response to figural representations at varying degrees of accuracy. If a representation is too human, we have an uncanny instinctual response to avoid the fake human. The representation of the things in our world in new materials and altered scales is a powerful communicator for eliciting emotional and intellectual response. For this assignment you sculpt a pair of objects that are compositionally and conceptually dynamic with potential as symbol, metaphor, or allusion. Carefully consider how the levels of exactness in form, texture, scale, material, color, and orientation will change the formal and conceptual understanding of the representation. Taking inspiration from two objects, Students are required to additively sculpt one object in clay and reductively carve the other in foam or wood to make an exact representation.

Project 2 - Multiples[Read more]

Project Description: Through the investigation of the multiple, create an artwork that is greater than the sum of its related parts. Consider carefully what can be communicated with many related sculptural forms that cannot with one. Multiples can be used to mark time, place, create comparative systems, and generate meaningful patterns. Using clay and at least 2 other materials, students are expected to create multiple related forms through casting and fabrication that when connected physically and visually integrate into a singular sculptural form.
